The Exmouth Players (CIO) present “Private Peaceful”, a play by Michael Morpurgo (author of War Horse) as adapted by Simon Reade, at The Blackmore Theatre on Sat 10th and Sun 11th November 2018, including a Saturday Matinee, directed by Alan Smith. Evening performances are at 7.30pm and the Saturday Matinee starts at 2.30pm.
This presentation is in Commemoration of the Centenary of the End of the First World War.
Private Peaceful relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night, he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.
Michael Morpurgo’s inspiration for his book “Private Peaceful” (winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year) came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War.
‘Private Peaceful at the theatre is a moving experience that not only tells the story of a young soldier’s final day in World War One, but perhaps more importantly conveys the strength of human spirit.’ – Michael Morpurgo
Alan Smith, director of this play, comments: “It is very much my pleasure and honour to be directing Private Peaceful, especially at this very important celebration of the end of the First World War. Some people might say that it has been a hundred years and maybe we should forget it, but I say ‘we should never forget’.
Alan describes the play and cast: “Tommo tells the story of his life as a young boy growing up in rural Devon, his first love Molly, and the events that have led to the situation he finds himself in. I have been very lucky to find a real star in my Tommo Peaceful played by Jasper Wiseman, a very talented young man. Also I would like to thank my voices off played by a very experienced band of Blackmore actors. Michael Morpurgo gives us a look at the joy of being a young boy living in the country, and the horrors of war. A wonderful combination of emotions that have us laughing one minute and crying the next. I hope very much that you all enjoy it.”
